Challenge Your Own Thinking

Business Turnaround Basics – Your Challenge

Many of us walk around and operate in our own little world. A world where everything is seen through and perceived by our own point of view. This point of view is often guarded by our ego.

For example, if you come up with an idea or a new way to do something as part of a business turnaround initiative or a cost reduction strategy, it automatically seems like the best way possible.

Every other option automatically seems illogical or second rate.

We all have been guilty of coming up with and falling in love with our own ideas.

This type of thinking can get you into trouble fast. You may believe your idea is the best idea available right now but what you must do is learn to remove your own glasses (figuratively speaking) before you can see or think about another option.

You must learn to challenge your own thinking which will not only help you see things in a new light, but also help boost your creativity which will lead to bigger better ideas and improvements (this is the type of thinking that causes the light bulb to go off inside your head).

So the next time you come up with a plan or an idea as part of a business turnaround or cost reduction program do the following:

Do not make the assumption that your idea is the best in fact, pretend that the idea you have is the worst way to do something.

Defend this idea. Ask yourself why this would be the worst way to do something. Actually write down the reasons why.

Next, ask yourself what are the facts regarding this idea/improvement?

Learn to challenge your idea with facts and logic no matter how good it sounds, learn to look at the opposite approach to add more dimension to your problem solving.

If after the following exercises, your idea still seems as valid as it did when you began, then go for it.

Remember that questions can be more powerful than answers.
